Why Holiday Travel Requires Extra Planning
November through early January isn’t just busy, it’s one of the highest-demand travel periods of the entire year. Families want to escape the cold. Couples plan warm-weather getaways. Schools are closed, companies shut down, and people everywhere are ready for a break.
And what does that mean? Everyone is traveling at the same time.
This translates to:
Resort availability drops faster
Prices rise earlier
Flights fill up quickly
“Flexible” travel dates become more limited
The reality is, even the most flexible travelers can find themselves choosing between what’s left rather than what they really want if they wait too long.
But don’t worry. This is where planning ahead (and working with a travel advisor!) makes all the difference.
Tip #1: Start Planning 9–12 Months in Advance
If you’re thinking, “Isn’t that a little early?”, I promise you, it’s not.
Holiday weeks (especially the days between Christmas and New Year’s) are among the first to book out across resorts, villas, and boutique hotels worldwide. The best rooms, views, and nightly rates often disappear months before the pumpkins even hit the shelves.
A good rule of thumb:.
For Caribbean travel, aim for 10–12 months ahead.
For Europe or long-haul destinations, start 6–9 months ahead.
Even if you’re not ready to finalize a trip, getting on my client list early means I can monitor openings, secure preferred rooms, and snag the best perks the second they become available.
Tip #2: Be Strategic About Flight Timing
Airfare during the holidays works on its own unique timeline. Instead of dropping last minute (like it does sometimes in shoulder seasons), these fares typically increase as the holidays approach, and they rarely come back down.
Here’s what I recommend:
Book flights at least 3–6 months ahead for major hubs.
For Caribbean destinations or smaller islands with fewer flights, book even earlier.
If you see a fare within your budget, grab it. Holiday airfare rarely rewards waiting.
And if you’re dreaming of something like Anguilla, St. Barths, or Turks & Caicos? The smaller the island, the fewer the seats...and the faster things book. And we know everyone’s chasing the sun this time of year.
Tip #3: Flexibility = Your Secret Weapon
Holiday travel tends to be rigid. You’re often tied to school breaks, work closures, or family schedules. But even a little flexibility can open up a world of options.
If possible, consider:
Flying out before December 23
Returning after January 2
Adjusting by just one day on either end (one day of missed school won’t hurt anyone!)
Splitting the trip between two resorts or destinations
Flexibility allows me to explore more inventory, find better rates, and get you the exact experience you want without settling.
Tip #4: Consider a Warm-Weather
Destination (But Don’t Wait!)
Nothing beats trading the winter chill for turquoise water, soft sand, and sunshine, but here’s what most people don’t realize:
The Caribbean is one of the busiest regions in the world during the holiday season.
Not spring break.
Not summer.
The holidays.
This is why planning ahead matters so much.
A True Story (And a Cautionary Tale)
Just this September, clients reached out hoping to book a Caribbean trip for December 26–January 2. By then, my usual Anguilla favorites had only two resorts left… starting at $27,000 and $34,000 for the week.
Yikes.
Had we started even a few months earlier, they would have had dozens of options with far more normal holiday pricing. But by September? Most of the island (and many others!) was already sold out.
Tip #5: Choose Experiences, Not Just Destinations
The holidays are special, and your getaway should feel the same. Instead of focusing solely on “where,” think about how you want your trip to feel:
Do you want…
A festive Christmas in a European village?
A quiet New Year’s retreat in the mountains?
A romantic beachfront escape?
A family-friendly adventure somewhere warm?
Starting with the experience you want helps me narrow in on destinations, properties, and itineraries that will make your holiday trip truly unforgettable.
Tip #6: Use a Travel Advisor to Your Advantage
Holiday travel is competitive. Inventory is tight. Rates fluctuate. And the difference between a good trip and an incredible one often comes down to strategy.
Working with a travel advisor gives you access to:
Preferred rates
Added amenities (upgrades, resort credits, early check-in/late check-out)
Insider recommendations
Real-time availability insights
Backup options if something books out
Someone who handles the entire logistics puzzle for you
Instead of spending hours refreshing hotel websites and stressing over airfare, you get a stress-free experience from start to finish.
Tip #7: Book with Intention
Holiday Travel Is an Investment
Whether you're booking a $2,000 trip or a $20,000 one, holiday travel is, by definition, peak-season pricing. Planning ahead helps soften the blow:
Better availability = more price flexibility
Early booking = access to promotions before blackout dates kick in
More options = you choose what aligns with your budget, not what’s leftover
And if you love luxury resorts? They book first. Always.
Especially over festive season.
Tip #8: If You Want the Caribbean in 2026… Start Now
As the temps start to dip, I know your feed is full of friends escaping to the Caribbean. If you’re already dreaming about sunshine and turquoise water for next winter, now is the time to think ahead.
Many people don’t know this, but December through early January is one of the busiest times of year for Caribbean resorts. That means limited availability, premium pricing, and a whole lot of “sorry, we’re fully committed.”
If a warm-weather escape is on your 2026 wish list, getting on my client list early means we can lock in:
Better rates
The room category you actually want
Your preferred dates
Exclusive perks
A smooth, stress-free planning experience
Early birds get the beachfront suites. Always.
