Mallorca or Ibiza? A Different Side of Spain’s Balearic Islands

Mallorca and Ibiza have been everywhere lately, and for good reason.

Beautiful beaches, clear Mediterranean water, amazing food, charming towns, and gorgeous hotels.

But if you hear "Ibiza" and immediately picture a nightclub or assume the Balearic Islands are strictly a party destination, I need to introduce you to a completely different side of this part of Spain!

Because while you absolutely can come here to stay out until sunrise, you can also spend your days swimming in quiet coves, eating long lunches overlooking the Mediterranean, hiking, boating, wandering through villages or checking into a beautiful spa and barely leaving your hotel. Much more my speed!

And that's what I find so appealing about the Balearic Islands. You can make a trip here exactly what you want it to be.

Two properties in particular have caught my eye: Six Senses Ibiza and the brand-new Mandarin Oriental Punta Negra, Mallorca.

They offer two very different ways to experience the islands and neither requires setting foot in a nightclub.

First, Where Are the Balearic Islands?

The Balearic Islands sit in the Mediterranean off the eastern coast of mainland Spain. Mallorca is the largest of the islands, while Ibiza is probably the name most Americans immediately recognize.

And while they're part of the same island chain, I wouldn't necessarily treat Mallorca and Ibiza as interchangeable.

Mallorca gives you a little bit of everything. There are beautiful beaches and coves, but you also have Palma, historic towns, mountain landscapes, incredible restaurants and plenty to explore away from the water.

Ibiza has its famous nightlife scene, of course, but get away from the party hubs and you'll find a completely different island, especially in the north. Think rugged coastline, turquoise coves, bohemian villages, wellness, farm-to-table food and a much slower pace.

Which one is right for you really depends on what you want from the trip.

Six Senses Ibiza:

The Quiet Side of the Island

If you want to experience Ibiza without making the party scene the center of your vacation, Six Senses Ibiza is exactly the kind of property I'd consider.

It's tucked away on Cala Xarraca Bay on the island's northern tip, far from the version of Ibiza you might be picturing. The property is built into the coastline with views over that ridiculously blue Mediterranean water, and everything revolves around wellness, food, music, sustainability and the natural setting.

This is the Ibiza I'd recommend for my travelers who want gorgeous beaches and that relaxed, bohemian energy without full-scale parties. There's an infinity pool overlooking Xarraca Bay, kayaking, paddleboarding, daily wellness activities, a yoga studio and deck, and a sunset ceremony each evening.

In other words, you can absolutely fill your days. Or you could do nothing! Both sound pretty great to me.

And Because It's Six Senses...

Let's Talk About the Spa

Wellness is a BIG part of the experience here. The Six Senses Spa spans more than 1,200 square meters and includes a hammam, steam room, sauna, hot bath, treatment rooms, fitness facilities and dedicated spaces for yoga. There are also personalized wellness programs focused on everything from sleep and fitness to detox and yoga.

I like that you can take this as seriously or as casually as you want.

You don't have to turn your vacation into a weeklong wellness retreat. You can book a treatment, take a morning yoga class and then immediately go have a cocktail by the pool. Again: balance!

But if wellness is the reason you're traveling, Six Senses gives you the opportunity to go much deeper with screenings, multi-day programs, visiting practitioners and dedicated retreats.

Come Hungry

The food is another reason Six Senses Ibiza has my attention.

The resort focuses heavily on local and seasonal ingredients, including produce grown at its nearby organic farm. Dining ranges from Balearic-inspired breakfasts to Italian, Spanish and North African-influenced dishes, plus drinks and snacks by the pool.

This is the kind of property where I wouldn't feel pressure to constantly leave for dinner just because I'm in Ibiza. And I LOVE that on a resort vacation.

There are times when I want a long list of reservations around town. And then there are trips when I want to shower after the beach, put on a dress and walk approximately three minutes to dinner. Six Senses feels very much like the latter!

Who Would I Send to Six Senses Ibiza?

Couples immediately come to mind. I think this would be such a fun honeymoon or anniversary destination, especially if you've already done Italy or Greece and want something a little different for a European summer trip.

But I wouldn't rule it out for families either. Six Senses has its Grow With Six Senses children's programming for ages 4–12 and offers babysitting upon request.

It could also be a great girls' trip if the group wants equal parts wellness, beach, good food and cocktails. You still get Ibiza - just a very different version of it.

Mandarin Oriental Punta Negra:

Mallorca's Newest Luxury Resort

Over in Mallorca, there is a brand-new property I'm very excited about.

Mandarin Oriental Punta Negra opened in June 2026 on Mallorca's southwest coast in Calvià, near Puerto Portals.

The resort sits right on the Mediterranean, surrounded by Aleppo pines, gardens and secluded coves. It's also Mandarin Oriental's first property in Mallorca.

And this one immediately stands out to me as a great option for families traveling together.

You get all the ease of a beautiful waterfront resort, but you're not isolated from the rest of Mallorca. You're near Puerto Portals and within easy reach of Palma, so you can mix resort days with exploring rather than choosing one or the other. That's a huge plus for me as a luxury travel advisor!

The Food Alone Has My Attention

If your vacations revolve around where you're going to eat (and mine often do) Punta Negra is worth knowing about.

One of the biggest additions is Matsuhisa, from Chef Nobu Matsuhisa, which is scheduled to open in October. The restaurant will pair Nobu-style Japanese cuisine with sea views, a sushi counter, outdoor bar and Japanese-inspired cocktails.

And that's just one piece of the larger dining experience at the resort.

I could very easily see a trip here falling into a rhythm of breakfast overlooking the water, a morning exploring Mallorca, lunch somewhere in Palma, an afternoon back at the pool and dinner at the resort.

Which is exactly how I want to vacation in Spain.

Mallorca Gives You So Much to Explore

This is where Mallorca really shines for travelers who like a little variety.

You could spend plenty of time by the water, but you're also within reach of Palma and the Serra de Tramuntana mountain range, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its dramatic landscapes, old pathways and hiking opportunities. So your itinerary doesn't have to be seven straight days at the beach.

Spend one day on a boat, another exploring Palma, hike or drive through the mountain, find a tiny village for lunch, and then give yourself an entire day when you don't leave Punta Negra at all.

This is why I especially like Mallorca for families or multigenerational trips. When you're traveling with several people, everyone usually wants something slightly different.

The beach person gets the beach, the active person can hike, the shopper gets Palma, the foodie is definitely covered.

And everyone can meet back at the resort for dinner!

And Then There Are the Resort Days

Because Mandarin Oriental Punta Negra is absolutely a place where you should plan to stay put for a day or two.

The property has pools overlooking the Mediterranean along with a significant wellness component, and the location gives you direct access to Mallorca's coastline and coves. This is where I'd build in some intentional downtime.

One of my biggest pieces of advice for Europe trips is to stop feeling like you need to see something every single day. You flew all the way to Mallorca and booked a beautiful Mediterranean resort. Enjoy it!

Order lunch by the water, go to the spa, swim, read your book, have a drink, take a nap. Palma will still be there tomorrow!

Mallorca vs. Ibiza: Which One Should You Choose?

This is where I'd start with how you actually like to travel.

Choose Ibiza if you want something a little more bohemian and wellness-focused. Six Senses Ibiza would be especially good for couples, honeymooners or friends who want beautiful beaches, great food and plenty of time to relax.

Choose Mallorca if you want more variety built into the trip. Mandarin Oriental Punta Negra gives you the resort experience, but Mallorca also has Palma, mountain scenery, villages, hiking, boating and plenty to explore.

For families or a multigenerational trip, I'd probably have Mallorca on my radar first simply because there's so much variety.

For a romantic trip where the entire goal is to relax, eat well and spend as much time near the water as possible - Six Senses Ibiza sounds pretty hard to beat.

And depending on how much time you have, we can always talk about experiencing both!

A Completely Different Side of Spain

I think that's ultimately what has me so interested in the Balearic Islands right now.

They give you a European summer trip that feels a little different from the usual Italy-or-Greece itinerary without sacrificing any of the things you probably want from a Mediterranean vacation.

Beautiful water. Amazing food. Gorgeous hotels. Sunshine. Boats. Long lunches. Spa days.

And whether you choose Mallorca, Ibiza or a combination of the two, I can help you figure out which island and hotel fit the way you actually want to travel.

Because if Ibiza's reputation has kept it off your list until now, Six Senses might just change your mind. Let’s plan your trip together!
