How to Choose the Best Location for Your Hotel
When planning a trip, most people start with the hotel.
They scroll through photos; compare amenities, prices, and review; and save anything with a beautiful pool or a well-designed room. And while those details absolutely do matter, there’s something even more important that sometimes gets overlooked:
Location.
Because the truth is, a beautiful hotel in the wrong location can completely change how your trip feels and unfolds.
And on the flip side, the right location can make everything flow more effortlessly, from your daily plans to how easy you’re able to navigate from one part of the day to the next.
If you’ve ever wondered how to choose where to stay on vacation, this is where I always start with clients.
Why Hotel Location Matters
More Than You Think
A hotel isn’t just where you sleep, it serves as an anchor for your entire trip.
It shapes:
How you spend your mornings
How easy it is to explore
Whether you need transportation (and how often)
The overall pace of your days
How often you need to leave the property
I’ve seen it time and time again: two travelers in the same destination can have completely different experiences simply based on where they stay.
That’s why one of the most important luxury travel planning tips I can give is this:
Don’t just choose the hotel, choose the experience you want, and let that guide the location.
Secluded vs. In-Town:
Which Is Right for You?
One of the first decisions to make when choosing the best area to stay is whether you want to be tucked away or right in the center of it all.
Secluded Stays
Think:
Private resorts
Hillside retreats
Beachfront properties removed from town
These are ideal if you want:
Slower mornings
Minimal planning
Space to fully unwind
Secluded hotels are often designed to be the experience. You’re not leaving for dinner, you’re likely choosing between 4 or 5 on-site dining experiences. You’re not rushing to activities, you’re just easing into the day.
But it’s worth noting: getting anywhere outside the property may require a car service or longer travel time. If you have one or two off-site must-do’s, no big deal. But if most of what you’re wanting to do is in town, this may not be your best option.
In-Town Locations
On the other hand, some hotels place you exactly where everything is happening.
Think:
Walkable city centers
Boutique hotels near restaurants and shops
Properties woven into the local culture
These are perfect if you:
Like to explore throughout the day
Prefer variety in dining and activities
Want to step outside and immediately feel the destination
This is a great option for those who love to fully experience a city and get outside of the property you book.
The Question I Always Ask Clients
When deciding between secluded vs central hotel locations, I always ask:
“Do you want your trip to feel like an escape or an experience?”
There’s no wrong answer, but knowing yours makes the decision much easier. And of course, there are certainly options that blend secluded and in-town available for those who want a little of both.
Why Views Matter
More Than You Expect
This is one of those details that people sometimes treat as a “nice to have.” It’s not.
The view from your hotel can completely shift how the space feels and how you experience your time there.
Think about:
Waking up to the ocean
Watching the sunset over the mountains
Having a balcony overlooking a historic city
These aren’t just aesthetic upgrades, they become part of your daily routine and tend to dictate your the ‘off hours’ of your trip.
If scenery is important to you, I always recommend prioritizing:
Oceanfront or sea view rooms
Mountain-facing suites
Rooms with terraces or large windows
Because even small moments (morning coffee, getting ready for dinner) feel different when the setting is right.
Don’t Overlook Distance
from the Airport
This is one of the most practical (and underrated) hotel location travel tips.
After a long travel day, the last thing you want is an unexpected two-hour transfer.
And while that might not seem like a big deal when you’re booking, it can feel very different when you’re tired, navigating luggage, and just ready to settle in.
A few things to consider:
Is the hotel within 30–45 minutes of the airport?
Will you need a private transfer?
Are roads direct or winding (especially in coastal or mountainous areas)?
Sometimes choosing a slightly different area (without sacrificing quality, of course) can make arrival and departure days significantly smoother. And for some, this really truly does not matter. But for others, this is a game changer and needs to be considered beforehand.
Stay Close to What You
Actually Want to Do
This is where travel becomes more intentional.
Before choosing a hotel, think about the experiences that matter most to you.
Do you want:
Beach clubs and waterfront dining?
Wineries and countryside views?
Historic sites and cultural landmarks?
Hiking trails or outdoor activities?
Simple a beautiful hotel with a spa?
The closer you are to the things you care about, the easier your trip will feel.
You’ll spend less time coordinating transportation and more time actually enjoying where you are.
It also helps reduce:
Transportation costs
Time spent in transit
The need for overly structured itineraries
Everything becomes more natural, more flexible, and quite frankly, more fun.
The Hidden Cost of the “Wrong” Location
Sometimes a hotel might seem perfect on paper, but if the location isn’t aligned, it can create friction throughout your trip.
This can look like:
Constantly needing taxis or drivers
Feeling disconnected from the destination
Spending more time planning logistics than enjoying the experience
And in many cases, those added costs (both time and money) outweigh any initial savings.
That’s why choosing the best hotel location isn’t just about convenience, it’s about value.
My Approach as a Luxury Travel Advisor
When I help clients plan a trip, we don’t start with a list of hotels.
We start with how they want the trip to feel.
From there, I guide them toward:
The right area first
Then the right property within that area
Because once the location is right, everything else becomes easier:
Your itinerary flows
Your days feel balanced
Your experience feels aligned from start to finish
And that’s really the goal. Not just a beautiful trip, but one that feels effortless.
Final Thoughts: Start with Location, Not Just the Hotel
If you take one thing away from this:
Choosing the right location can completely shape how your trip unfolds.
And while photos and amenities will always catch your eye, it’s the location that determines how it all comes together. Don’t forget to check the ‘map’ tab when travel planning!
If you’re unsure where to start, this is right where I step in: helping you think through the details you might not immediately consider, so your trip feels seamless from the very beginning.
